ALASKA
In 1989 I took the ultiment bike trip to Alaska. It was quite an adventure.
But first we have to build a boat! Actually a 35 ft. fishing boat. We'll put
my motorcycle in the fish hold and cruise up the Inside Passage, cut across
the Gulf of Alaska, drop the bile off at Seward, motor around to Cook Inlet
and not fish due to the year of the Exxon Valdez, take the train up to Dinali
and finally back down to pick up the bike- gee, I hope its still there. Then
we get to ride it around, and okay, I cheated, and hop the ferries back down
to Seattle. Watch out for Rex on the way. Another sad story I don't want to
tell.

ARCHES
NATIONAL PARK UTAH
Arches is one of my favorite parks. There are hundreds of these incredible
sandstone arches within its small confines above Moab, Utah. Devil's Garden
is full of them.

BRYCE CANYON
NATIONAL PARK UTAH
Bryce Canyon is a strange landscape of color and light. Indeed, it is the
perfect cauldron for my motorcycle lore.

COLORADO
Don't tell Rooti but Colorado is a pretty cool state. Except it always
rains! "If I wanted it to rain I would have stayed in Washington."

GREAT BASIN
NATIONAL PARK NEVADA
Great Basin National Park is just over the Utah border in Nevada. It includes
Wheeler Peak, the tallest point in Nevada and Leyman Caves. It's miles and miles
from anywhere whic is probably why we like it. How about a hike to the top of
Wheeler Peak and back down at mid-night? You'll need a full moon.

HAVASU
CANYON
ARIZONA
Havasu is a tiny village inside the Grand Canyon. The only way in or out
is on foot, horse, or hilocopter. The hike is only eight miles and a couple
of thousand feet drop. Just beyond the village of Supi is a campground
below Havasu Falls. It is paradise.

LAKE POWELL
GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA UTAH
Okay, what do you need when you are out in the middle of the hot dry
desert? No, not a popcicle, though that would be good. How about a lake?
How about a very big lake? How about damming up the Colorado River and
backing it up for over 100 miles and flooding Glen Canyon? It's called
Lake Powell. Bring a boat or rent one, as big as a house.

MONUMENT
VALLEY
ARIZONA
Monument Valley Arizona is an incredible place. There are three huge
monoliths in the middle of this vast valley. Imagine it was once all a thick
layer of such stone, hundreds of feet thick, and now it is all but these
three gone. Gone where? Washed and blown away over much much time.

NATURAL BRIDGES
NATIONAL MONUMENT UTAH
|
Natural Bridges is a nice little stop. It used to be one of my favorite
campsites before some idiot park ranger decided he (or she!) had to protect
the fragile environment from us tent campers and built tent pad condoms out
of treated lumber (I'm sure that has no effect on the environs!) and hardpan
(a combination of crushed rock and sand that is IMPOSSIBLE to pound a tent
peg into). Obviously this person never camped out in his/her life and should
be promoted immediately! A campgropund is a selected site in which we humans,
whom last time I checked were still a part of this nature they are trying to
protect, are susposed to be allowed to lie our heads down on the ground at
night, eye to eye for a precious moment with nature. Not proped up on some
artifical prophylactic!

Don't worry, the next Ice Age will clean everything up.

ZION
NATIONAL PARK UTAH
Zion National Park is one of my favorites. I think it is tied with
Glacier. Another example of natural wonder, the Virgin River has cut this
narrow valley through hundreds of feet of the most colorful sandstone.
Angel's Landing is a 2.5 mile hike up to the top of one of the fins
that mustn't be missed. And the east highway is one of the most spectacular
bike rides in the world, except for the bu$$e$.
